Long Covid and Grief

Long COVID and grief can be closely intertwined. People with long COVID often experience a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, cognitive impairment, and mood swings. These symptoms can have a significant impact on a person's life, leading to social isolation, financial hardship, and a loss of sense of self.

Grief is a natural response to loss — people with long COVID may grieve the loss of their health, their ability to work, or their ability to participate in activities they used to enjoy. They may also grieve the loss of their sense of self or their identity as a “healthy” person.

Grief is not a linear process, it can be unpredictable and challenging. People with long COVID may experience grief in waves, and they may feel different emotions at different times.

There are a number of things that people with long COVID can do to cope with grief. Here are a few tips:

Allow yourself to feel your emotions

It is important to allow yourself to feel your grief, even if it is painful. Trying to suppress your emotions will only make them worse.

Talk to someone you trust

Talking to a friend, family member, therapist, or other trusted person who “gets it” can help you to process your grief and feel supported.

Join a support group

There are many support groups available for people with long COVID and their loved ones. Joining a support group can help you to connect with others who understand what you are going through.

Take care of yourself

It is important to take care of yourself both physically and emotionally during times of grief, and even more so when you are experiencing long COVID. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and incorporating movement in your day to the extent your body can support. You may also want to explore relaxation techniques and ways to decrease unnecessary stress in your life.

Be patient with yourself

Processing the grief that can come with long COVID takes time. Be patient with yourself and don't expect to feel better overnight.

Celebrate your successes

It is important to celebrate your progress, no matter how small. This will help you to stay motivated and hopeful.

Find meaning and purpose in your life

Finding meaning and purpose in your life can help you to cope with the new reality of your life with long COVID. This may involve finding ways to engage with activities that you enjoy, spend time with loved ones, or participate in things you care about.

Remember, you are not alone. Many people are struggling with long COVID and grief. There are people who care about you and want to help. Please reach out for support when you need it.
